SAT Overview

The state Department of Education announced, in 2016, that Colorado high schools will be required to take the SAT college-entrance exam, instead of the ACT starting in spring 2017.  The SAT is an admission test accepted by all U.S. colleges, and the College Board has programs to encourage all students to take advantage of higher education.

The SAT is an opportunity to measure students’ readiness for college.  Most students take the SAT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.

The chart below interprets the score from the ACT scoring to the new SAT scoring.  The Academy used a 24 or better score on ACT as an indicator of college readiness, so going forward if you receive 1160 or better they are equivalent.

Both ACT and SAT tests are about the same but there are some differences.  SAT questions increase in difficulty level as you move through the section.  The questions are evidence and context-based in an effort to focus on real-world situations and multi-step problem solving.

The Academy will schedule a SAT testing day around April for all juniors.  Students are then welcome to take additional tests if the student would like to “shoot” for a higher score.  Those tests are offered seven times a year: January, March/April, May, June, October, November, and December.  Both tests (The Academy and other locations) are weighed evenly, but students do not have to pay for the one provided by the school.  Registration is typically about four weeks before the test date.

The scoring of sections for Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing are each scored on a scale of 200-800.  Composite SAT scores are the sum of the two sections scores and range from 400-1600.
